There are many free sites. Why is a membership to your program important? Ask anyone who uses coupons on a regular basis and they will tell you about the hours they spend researching, clipping and sorting their coupons. Manufacturer coupons are available from the Sunday newspaper. These leaflets should be collected and filed by date of circulation. When the system matches a sale item with an available manufacturer coupon, you go to that weeks coupon folder and then cut the appropriate coupon from the leaflet. This saves hours of cutting and filing coupons that might not ever be used.

The product manufacturer pays the store for the amount of the coupon as well as a handling fee for the store accepting the coupon from the consumer.

Each coupon has an expiration date printed on it. Some are good for a couple of weeks, others for a few months.

A particular store or certain manufacturers will double the face value of regular coupons for a limited time, on a particular day of the week, or throughout the duration of a special sale.

Some items require a mail-in-rebate to obtain the full value of the coupon. However, if an item is on sale you will be saving money just by the fact you are purchasing it at the sale price.

Check with the store upfront. Not many grocery stores do, but you may find a store that does double coupons. Some manufacturer coupons actually have "Do Not Double" written on them, but the majority of manufacturer coupons can be doubled if the store's policy allows it.

Some grocery stores will match a competitor's sales price on an item. All you have to do is bring in the competitor's sales circular. If the grocery store prides itself on its low price guarantee, this will save you an extra shopping trip.

Ask the store manager or customer service desk instead of a cashier. Become aware of the store policy to make the most of your savings.

Some grocery stores actually do accept expired coupons, but of course they would never tell you that unless you ask.

A rain check is a promise from the store that when the item is restocked, they will sell it to you for the price on the the original sale price. You can still use coupons with your rain check.

• You can only get a rain check if a store is out of product and it was advertised in their sale ad.

• You cannot get a rain check on "While Supplies Last" or "Limited Quantities" products.

• Rain checks have time limits - usually 2 weeks to 30 days.
